Women's Basketball Clamps Down on La Salle, 58-43
11/28/2018 9:03:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – For a third consecutive game, the Drexel women's basketball team never trailed as the Dragons handled business at La Salle on Wednesday night, 58-43. Drexel, the top-ranked scoring defense in the nation coming into Wednesday's action, clamped down on the defensive end and held the Explorers off despite 19 turnovers on the offensive end.
As she has done in each of the Dragons' first six games, Bailey Greenberg led all scorers with 19 points, matching her season average coming into the evening. She added nine rebounds, one shy of her fifth career double-double. Keishana Washington scored 14 on 6-of-11 shooting, the first double-figure scoring game of her career. Aubree Brown added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists as Drexel saw three players reach double figures for the first time this season.
Niki Metzel added six points, but grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to help Drexel control the glass to the tune of 38-26. Ana Ferariu scored five along with two steals, and Hannah Nihill finished with three points, three rebounds and a pair of assists.
Despite nine first-half turnovers that disrupted an otherwise effective offensive rhythm for the Dragons, Drexel rode its defense, the top scoring defense in the nation, to an early 10-3 lead. Bailey Greenberg had seven early points, but picked up her second foul with 3:32 to go in the first quarter and sat for most of the rest of the first half.
With their leading scorer on the bench, the Dragons relied on Aubree Brown, who scored their last five points of the first quarter, and Keishana Washington, who netted the team's first eight of the second. Drexel led 26-15 midway through the quarter before La Salle rattled off six quick points, prompting a timeout by Denise Dillon that stemmed the tide. Niki Metzel scored four down the stretch as the Dragons took a 30-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Coming out of the break, both teams struggled offensively but the Dragons held La Salle to just two points over the first 8:17 of the quarter to compensate. They led by 10 at the end of the third, and only briefly saw the advantage dip into single digits down the stretch.
Drexel will now enjoy eight days off before returning to action next Friday evening at Manhattan in the first day of the Manhattan College Holiday Tournament. The Dragons will take on Manhattan at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup against Wright State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
