YPSILANTI, Mich. - Trevor John scored 19 points in his Drexel debut, but Eastern Michigan held off Drexel, 66-62, in the season opener at the Convocation Center. The Eagles (2-0) scored the last four points of the game after a John three-pointer tied the game with 1:06 to go.
Drexel trailed by as many as 12 in the second half, but chipped away and kept the game within reach down the stretch. The Dragons were down 62-57 with 2:13 to go after a Paul Jackson free throw. They answered when Alihan Demir set up James Butler for a lay-up. On the next possession Kurk Lee came up with a big steal. Camren Wynter, making his collegiate debut, then found John in the corner and he drained a contested three to tie it up. However, Eastern Michigan answered with a Boubacar Toure dunk. The Dragons had a chance to take the lead, but Demir's three-pointer came up short and EMU made a pair of free throws to make it a four-point game with just 11 seconds to go. EMU blocked three Drexel shots in the closing seconds to pick up its second win of the year.
The Dragons played an inspired first half. Despite a slow start on the offensive end, the team played well defensively and kept the Eagles within range. The Dragons made seven three-pointers in the first half, three by John, and trailed by just two points at intermission. John scored nine points, while Wynter had six points and three assists off the bench in the opening half.
John made an impressive debut in a Drexel uniform. The graduate student made six three-pointers in 35 minutes of play. Lee was efficient, scoring 13 points on just 4-for-8 shooting. He made four three-pointers, had four assists and picked up two steals. Demir finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Wynter chipped in with six points and a team-high six assists. Drexel moved the ball well throughout the day and finished with 17 assists. The Dragons finished with 13 three-pointers and shot 37 percent overall.
Jackson led the Eagles with 20 points and six assists. Toure added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Kevin McAdoo came off the bench to score 10 points. Eastern Michigan shot 46 percent in the game, but despite its size advantage, only outrebounded Drexel by four.
The Dragons will have a short turnaround as they head back on the road this weekend. Coach Spiker's team will make the short trip up the New Jersey Turnpike and visit Rutgers on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
