Men’s Basketball Drops Saturday Affair to UMBC

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team (5-5) dropped a nonconference affair to the UMBC Retrievers (6-4) by a final of 91-76 from the Daskalakis Athletic Center to close a four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Troy Harper scored a team-high 22 points with eight field goals including two three-pointers. Graduate student Trevor John added 14 points going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Sophomore James Butler went 5-of-5 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the line for 13 points with eight rebounds. Freshman Camren Wynter handed out seven assists with four boards and four points. Freshman Tim Perry, Jr. scored eight points off the bench with seven rebounds. Freshman Matey Juric also notched five points as a reserve.
Drexel found themselves trailing in the early going, falling behind 25-16 midway through the first half. The Dragons then went on a 16-7 run over the next eight minutes to even the score with 2:46 to play at 32-all. UMBC went the final 5:19 of the first half without a field goal which helped Drexel back into the game as the Dragons pulled ahead in the last few minutes to lead by eight at the break, 43-35. Harper had 17 points at halftime to lead all scorers.
UMBC came out firing in the second half as Max Curran of the Retrievers made two quick three to cut Drexel's lead to two in the first minute of the second half. The Dragons stayed up over the next eight minutes, leading by as many as five until UMBC tied it up with 10:56 remaining at 62-62. The Retrievers outscored the Dragons 23-4 over the next seven minutes as Drexel could not keep the offense up. UMBC led by 14 with 3:40 to play, 80-66. The Dragons were able to get the deficit into single digits before UMBC won, 91-76.
