Brown's Triple-Double Fuels Women's Basketball at Charleston, 80-53
2/4/2018 3:20:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – It was a Super Sunday for the Drexel women's basketball team, as Aubree Brown recorded just the second triple-double in program history and the Dragons defeated the College of Charleston at TD Arena, 80-53. Brown finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in just 31 minutes of action as the Dragons led comfortably for most of the afternoon. It was the team's eighth consecutive victory, leaving them 18-5 overall and 10-1 in CAA play.
Brown's triple-double highlighted a balanced all-around attack for Drexel, which set a new season high with 80 points as five players reach double figures for a second straight game. Bailey Greenberg's 16 points led the team. Greenberg nearly had a double-double of her own, adding eight rebounds as well as two steals. Kelsi Lidge finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, chipping in six boards, four assists and three steals. Megan Marecic and Sara Woods each netted 10 points, as did Brown.
In all, nine different Dragons scored on Sunday afternoon, all posting at least three points. Hannah Nihill scored eight, dishing out four assists without a turnover and grabbing three rebounds in 22 minutes. Niki Metzel and Ana Ferariu each scored four. Ferariu came up with three rebounds to help Drexel control the glass, 38-31. Eline Maesschalck scored three to round out the Dragons' season-high point total.
The Dragons used a 14-0 run midway through the first quarter to grab control of the game and did not look back from there. Trailing 9-7, Drexel got it started with an and-one from Brown, who drove in and scooped it up and in with her left hand as she drew the foul. Greenberg followed with five straight points including a three-pointer from the top of the key. Drexel would get buckets from Marecic, Lidge and Greenberg before Charleston ended its drought of 4:40 with a lay-up that made it a 21-11 game.
By intermission, The Dragons held a 42-26 lead. The only real drama of the second half was provided by Brown, whose five points, six rebounds and six assists at halftime left her in position to pull off the rare feat. She scored just two in the third quarter, but found three teammates for buckets and reeled in a pair of rebounds.
The fourth quarter scoring opened with Brown's 10th assist. She worked it down low and fed her high school teammate Greenberg to expand Drexel's lead at the time to 64-38. It set a new career high for Brown with 10 assists.
On the Dragons' next possession, Greenberg missed a three-pointer, but Brown was there to gobble up the offensive board. She couldn't finish the shot, but got another rebound to mark her career-best 10th.
With the double-double in hand, head coach Denise Dillon called for Brown to spot up behind the three-point arc on the right wing. The ball went inside to Metzel, who drew the defense and popped it out to a wide open Brown for the three-pointer that sealed the triple-double with 7:02 remaining. Brown came out of the game 1:11 later with the Dragons firmly in control, up 71-43.
The triple double is the second in program history, joining Abby Redick who accomplished the feat on Jan. 16, 2014 at William & Mary. For the team, the win was just their second in five visits to Charleston since the Cougars joined the CAA.
Drexel will be back on the road for its next two games. The Dragons bring their eight-game winning streak to Elon on Friday night at 7 p.m., then remain in North Carolina to take on UNCW on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
