Win Streak Ends for Women's Basketball at Elon, 70-58

ELON, N.C. – On the heels of two of its highest-scoring games of the season, the Drexel women's basketball team could not find an offensive rhythm on Friday night at Elon as the Dragons saw their eight-game winning streak snapped, 70-58. Drexel hit just five field goals in the first half and scored a season-low six points in the first quarter in a game the Dragons never led.
Aubree Brown led the Dragons with 14 points, all of which came in the second half. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. Ana Ferariu finished with 10, her first double-figure output since Nov. 16 against La Salle. She added six rebounds to lead the team, and had two assists and a steal. Kelsi Lidge scored eight before fouling out for the first time this year. Bailey Greenberg and Eline Maesschalck each netted six, with Hannah NIhill adding five and Sara Woods four. Megan Marecic and Kayla Bacon rounded out the scoring column with three points and two points, respectively.
Drexel struggled offensively throughout the night, particularly in the first half when the Dragons went just 5-for-23 from the floor. They got looks inside early on, but could not finish and dug themselves a hole despite playing solid defense. Before intermission, the Dragons suffered scoring droughts of 6:21 and 4:06, but went 9-for-12 from the free throw line to stay within range, down just 26-19 at the break.
Elon controlled the glass and allowed Drexel just three second-chance points in the game – all in the fourth quarter. That rebounding effort allowed Elon to pull away late in the third quarter, rolling out to a 44-30 lead after three.
The Dragons' offense finally came to life in the fourth quarter, when Drexel nearly matched its output of the first three with 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Early in the fourth quarter, Brown drained the first of her three-pointers as Drexel drew a simultaneous off-the-ball foul. On the ensuing possession, Lidge drove from the left side. After a stop, Maesschalck added a triple of her own. The 8-0 run trimmed a 47-30 Elon lead down to 47-38 with 7:14 to play and prompted a Phoenix timeout.
The stoppage settled Elon, which responded with eight straight points of its own. Drexel would not get the lead back into single digits again as the Phoenix matched Drexel's 10-0 home record as the best home court marks in the CAA.
The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Dragons that dated back to Jan. 9. The streak stands tied for the fifth-longest in program history. It also drops Drexel out of a first place tie with James Madison, which beat Northeastern on Friday night. Nevertheless, the Dragons remain in control of their own destiny with a game against the Dukes remaining at the Daskalakis Athletic Center later in February.
The Dragons can't look that far ahead, however, as they remain on the road for a Sunday tilt at UNCW. That game tips off at 1 p.m. at the Trask Coliseum.
