PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel rowing team won four races and earned seven top-three finishes overall Saturday at the 36th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple on the Schuylkill River. The Dragons took wins in the women's varsity eight, women's varsity four, men's third varsity eight and men's freshmen eight.
The Dragons' women's varsity eight rowed past the competition in the Alleva XVII boat, winning comfortably with a time of 7:18.41, nearly seven seconds better than second-place Temple. After winning last weekend at the Cooper Sprints, the women's varsity four won its second race in a row in the Diane Corle boat, pulling a winning time of 8:03.77, nearly four seconds ahead of second-place Temple. The men also won two races on the day. The third varsity eight bested a strong field in the Lois Krall boat with a winning time of 6:38.37, three seconds ahead of second-place Saint Joseph's. The men's freshmen eight also got into the win column, racing a 6:41.12 in the Joseph Greipp boat to best second-place Saint Joseph's by more than three seconds.
Drexel also earned three second-place finishes on the day from the men's varsity eight and both second varsity eight boats. The Dragons' men's varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall II boat, raced a 6:34.28 but found itself behind a lightning quick Saint Joseph's boat, which rowed a 6:26.08. Four seconds separated the second- through sixth-place positions. The women's second varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, finished second to Temple by .44 seconds with a time of 7:30.73 to the Owls' 7:30.29. Drexel's men's second varsity eight, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, held of Michigan for second with a time of 6:36.29 but finished nearly 3.5 seconds behind Saint Joseph's.
Two other Drexel boats advanced to the final. The women's second varsity four took fourth in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat with a time of 8:57.69 in a race with which Temple ran away. The women's third varsity eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, finished sixth with an 8:35.60 in a race paced by George Washington.
Up next, the Dragons will face a tough test next weekend at the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
