WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Drexel rowing team retained a share of the women's team title and finished off the weekend on the Potomac River Saturday morning at the 30th annual George Washington Invitational with two more victories, bringing its total to six for the event. Drexel's women totaled 36 points to tie with Rhode Island for the title, while the men finished third. The Dragons won their women's varsity eight and women's varsity four races on Saturday after winning their men's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight, men's second varsity eight and women's varsity four races on Day 1.
The Dragons continued their strong rowing Saturday, the final day on the Potomac, with victories from the women's varsity eight and the women's varsity four. Drexel's top women's eight, racing in the Alleva XVII boat, rowed to a winning 6:21.60 to hold off second-place Rhode Island by half a second. Earlier in the morning, the women's four took its second victory of the weekend, racing to a 6:51.20 in the Diane Corle boat to beat out Rhode Island by nearly seven seconds. The Dragons also got second-place times from the men's varsity eight, men's second varsity eight and the women's second varsity eight. The top men's eight, racing in the Lois Krall II boat, finished 5.5 seconds behind No. 18 Navy with a time of 5:39.80. Drexel's second men's eight, in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, raced a tighter race with Navy, though the Midshipmen bested the Dragons' 5:43.60 by 1.5 seconds. The women's second eight rowed the closest race of the day, finishing two-tenths of a second behind Rhode Island to take second in the Cara Fry boat.
On Day 1, four of the six Drexel boats sent into action in Washington, D.C. came away victorious in Friday afternoon's racing. The men's varsity eight (receiving votes), racing in the Lois Krall II boat, held off a strong Hobart (receiving votes) crew by 2.2 seconds, as the Dragons rowed a winning 5:36.60. The women's second varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, bested second-place Georgetown LWT by nearly seven seconds with a final time of 6:35.20. The men's second varsity eight, which raced in the Sandra Lee Sheller II shell, edged Hobart by a second and a half in a head-to-head matchup with a time of 5:50.0. The women's varsity four continued its hot start to the season with another victory in the Diane Corle boat, this time comfortably racing to victory with a time of 7:15.30. Drexel's men's third varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall boat, was able to hold off Michigan for second place, finishing 8.5 seconds behind Navy with a time of 6:40.90. The women's varsity eight, racing in the newly dedicated Alleva XVII boat, finished second to Georgetown LWT after oars clashed.
The Dragons return to Philadelphia next weekend to host the 52nd annual Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday, April 14.
