Tennis Sweeps Hofstra on Senior Day, Men's Team Ties Program Record

PHILADELPHIA - The men's and women's tennis teams defeated Hofsta on Sunday afternoon at the Legacy Youth Tennis and Education Courts. The men's team won 4-3 while the women's team blanked the Pride, 7-0. With the win, the men's team tied the program record for most matches won (13) and have the highest winning percentage (.500).
The women's team jumped on the Pride early by sweeping the doubles point. Kendra Bunch and Ghita Benhadi teamed up for a 6-0 win at the top spot, followed by Salma Ziouti and Clary Rodriguez Cruz with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Ryshena Providence and Mya Fuentes partnered for a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot.
The Dragons carried the momentum over into singles play where they swept the Pride for a 7-0 win. Kendra Bunch jumped on Jasmine King, 6-0, 6-1, followed by Ghita Benhadi's 6-3, 6-1 win over Michal Kaplan. Salma Ziouti downed Alejandra Ruffin at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Mya Fuentes' 6-2, 6-3 win over Mehque Khokhar. To close things out, Clary Rodriguez Cruz beat Sarah Herndon, 6-3, 6-4 while Ryshena Providence swept Odessa Stork, 6-3, 6-1.
The men's match was slightly different as they dropped the doubles point before clinching the match in singles. Hamza Laleej and Xandy Hammitt paired up in the No. 3 spot to win, 6-0, but the Pride pulled away with the other two victories for the point.
Facing an uphill battle in singles, the Dragon's came out strong and won four matches to take home the win. Hamza Laleej downed Marcus Smith, 7-6 (9), 6-4, followed by Balaji Lakshamanan's 6-2, 7-6 (6) win against Niko Vulinovich at No. 2. Sinan Orhon defeated Coco Haener, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and Bernard Tefel clinched the match at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0.
Drexel returns to action when it heads to the CAA Championships hosted by Elon, beginning Thursday, April 19.
