PHILADELPHIA – Former Drexel men's basketball player and coach Ashley Howard has been named head coach at La Salle, the Explorers announced at a press conference Monday morning.
Howard has spent more than 15 years in the coaching ranks with assistant coaching stints at Villanova, Xavier, Drexel and La Salle. He spent five seasons from 2013-18 on Jay Wright's staff at Villanova, winning two national championships in three years (2016 & 2018). Before spending the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach under Chris Mack at Xavier, Howard returned to his alma mater to serve as assistant coach under Bruiser Flint from 2008-12. At Drexel, he was part of a staff that led the Dragons to consecutive 20-win seasons, including a school-record 29 victories in 2011-12. Prior to Drexel, Howard was hired out of college as an assistant under head coach Dr. John Giannini at La Salle, where he spent four seasons from 2004-08.
He began his career as a student assistant coach at Drexel in 2002 after an injury cut short his playing career for the Dragons. Howard went on to graduate from Drexel in 2004 with a degree in communications. As a player, Howard was played guard for the Dragons from 1999-2002. In what would turn out to be his final season, Howard averaged 8.9 points and a team-high 4.9 assists per game. He also tied for the team lead with 50 three-pointers and shot .382 from behind the arc.
Howard attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pa., where he was named a Street and Smith honorable mention high school All-American. Howard was also a two-time All-Catholic League selection and was a Second Team All-City selection by the Philadelphia Daily News.
