PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Athletics was tremendously impacted by the generosity of 1,825 donations on the university's third annual Day of Giving earlier this week. A day focused on competitive and engaged philanthropy, Drexel Athletics brought in $110,000 in donations in 24 hours.
Highlighting participation and an increase in donors, the university rewarded additional prize money to units and teams who had the most donors during hourly challenges, and kept all partakers informed on an interactive leader board. At the close of the Day of Giving, Drexel Athletics held four of the top five spots on the leader board throughout the University, and accounted for 43% of total donations to the University. Athletics teams won several hourly challenges, bringing in over $15,000 in additional prize money.
"The impact that was made on May 1 profoundly affects our student-athletes and athletic department," said Kerry DiBlasio, Assistant Vice President of Development. "We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped make this a monumental 24 hours for Drexel Athletics."
The wrestling team led the way with 525 donors, with women's crew and men's crew taking second and third place overall, respectively. Field hockey rounded out the fifth spot with just under 200 donors and over $20,000 raised for the team. Twelve out of the 18 varsity sports increased their donor amount from last year's Day of Giving.
"The outpouring of support from our alumnae, parents, student-athletes, staff and friends on the Day of Giving was incredible", said Associate Head Field Hockey Coach Nicky Hitchens. "We are lucky to work for such a supportive university and athletic department. We are grateful for the generous support which will allow us to continue to give our team the best possible experience at Drexel."
Drexel University brought in 4,229 total donations and raised over $900,000 for Day of Giving 2018.
