Field Hockey Drops Friday Night CAA Opener at No. 19 Delaware, 3-0

NEWARK, Del. — The Drexel field hockey team dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener Friday night at No. 19 Delaware, 3-0. The Dragons fell to 4-5 (0-1 CAA) on the year, while Delaware improved to 5-5 (1-0 CAA).
Blue Hens freshman Laurien Vink led off the scoring attack with her fourth goal of the season in the ninth minute as she connected on a penalty corner with assists from sophomore Femke Strien and junior Ally Pollak. Shortly thereafter, Delaware capitalized on another penalty corner in the 13th minute as senior Lisa Giezeman captured her 30th career goal with assists coming from Strien and fellow senior Kiki Bink.
Freshman Tessa Verweijen put in the final goal of the evening in the 41st minute with a high shot to the left of the net from approximately three yards out.
Puk Thewessen and Avery Powell led the Dragons with two shots apiece. Delaware led the Dragons in shots, 16-6, and shots on goal, 10-5. Erin Gilchrist made seven saves, while Sydney Rhodes made five saves for the shutout for Delaware. Delaware led the Dragons in penalty corner chances, 7-4.
Drexel returns to Buckley Field Sunday morning when it hosts Ohio at 11 a.m.
