Late Comeback Lifts Men’s Basketball Over Towson, 72-66

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team (9-11, 3-4 CAA) cemented a conference win behind a second-half comeback over the Towson Tigers (5-14, 1-5 CAA) on Thursday evening from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. by a final of 72-66.
Drexel played comeback kid once again in the effort as it marked their fourth win of the season after trailing by double digits.
Sophomore Jarvis Doles was the catalyst in the second half. Not only did the Baltimore native score 13 of his career-high 16 points in the final 20 minutes of action, but he scored 13-straight points for Drexel which was part of an 18-2 run for the Dragons.
With 11:04 to play, freshman Camren Wynter started the rally as he made a long pass to Doles for a fastbreak layup to bring Drexel within eight of the Tigers, 55-47. Junior Alihan Demir capped the 18-2 run with a layup with 3:48 left in the game as the Dragons now led, 65-59.
Demir finished with a game-high 22 points behind 6-of-11 shooting including 9-of-13 from the charity strike. The junior turned in his fifth double-double as he added a career- and game-high 16 rebounds along with three assists and two blocks.
Early on, Drexel found themselves in a 25-14 hole with 8:34 to play in the first half. Over the next four minutes, the Dragons went on a 13-3 run to get within one of the Tigers at 28-27. Drexel kept the pressure up to take a one-point edge at the break, 35-34. Demir led all scorers at halftime with 11 points.
Taking a one-point lead into the second half, the game appeared to shift a few minutes into the final period. With the affair tied 37-all, junior James Butler, who had eight points at that point, was hit with an offensive foul and subsequent technical foul. From there, Towson went on a quick 5-0 run before going up by 11 points with just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
Towson struggled in the second half as Drexel put on the offensive pressure led by Doles and Demir. The Tigers hit just one of their final 17 shots in the game including no field goals in the final 2:42. Drexel held Towson to just 32.4% shooting.
Drexel shot 41.9% from the floor (24-of-59) and 80.0% from the free-throw line (16-of-20).
Doles finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Senior Troy Harper added 10 points and five boards. Wynter dished out eight assists in the win. Butler and graduate student Trevor John each notched eight points.
