PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team (10-11, 4-4 CAA) came from behind to defeat the James Madison Dukes (9-11, 2-5 CAA) on Saturday afternoon from the Daskalakis Athletic Center to close out homecoming week in University City, 73-68.
For the fifth time this year, the Dragons erased a double-digit deficit to walk away with the win. All four of their CAA wins have been after trailing by 10 points or more.
Senior Troy Harper finished with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting with six rebounds, three assists and one block. Graduate student Trevor John followed him up with 15 points with two treys while going 5-of-6 from the line. Freshman Camren Wynter had 14 points including 10 in the second half with five boards, four assists and one steal. Junior James Butler grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in the win to go alongside nine points.
JMU jumped out to a 20-4 lead as the Dragons could not find the bottom of the net. The Dukes started 4-of-4 from three-point range while Drexel was 0-of-4 from deep. But James Madison's aggressiveness on the offensive end translated to over-aggressiveness on the defensive end as the Dukes racked up fouls, putting Drexel on the line for a majority of the first half. DU went 10-of-14 from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes compared to 0-of-6 for JMU, keeping the Dragons in the game.
John knocked down the Dragons' first three of the day with 8:39 to play in the first half to bring Drexel within 12 at 26-14. That trey sparked a 7-0 run as Harper made a pair of shots to get the Dragons within eight, 26-18. Another 6-0 run shrunk JMU's margin to just three with 3:20 left in the first half. A free throw by John, a jumper by Butler and a fastbreak layup by Harper gave Drexel the 33-31 edge at intermission.
The Dragons never trailed in the second half as they held on for the win. After 10 points in the first half, Harper notched 12 in the final period while Wynter also scored 10 in the last 20 minutes. Wynter made a shot with 3:48 remaining to give DU a 12-point lead, its largest of the game.
JMU would not go away as Stuckey Mosley poured in a game-high 25 points. The Dukes were able to get back within five points before time expired, 73-68.
The Dragons shot 40.7% in the first half compared to 48.4% in the second half while holding JMU to 41.2% for the game.
