Offense Erupts in Second Half as Men’s Basketball Downs Elon, 79-65

PHILADELPHIA – Alihan Demir scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists as Drexel defeated Elon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday, 79-65. It was the first Colonial Athletic Association win for the Dragons, who improved to 7-9 overall. Elon dropped to 1-2 in CAA play and 5-11 on the season.
Trailing 35-34 at halftime, Drexel opened the half with a 9-0 run as Trevor John and Troy Harper sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Demir three-point play. The Dragons, who struggled from the floor in the early going, turned it on in the second half. Drexel outscored the Phoenix, 45-30, and shot 59 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes.
Demir played well on both ends of the court. He finished the night 9-for-15 shooting and had five of his eight rebounds on the offensive end. Harper led the team with 21 points. John nailed four three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Freshman Camren Wynter had another solid all-around game with eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Elon came out strong in the first leg of its two-game trip to the Northeast. The Phoenix led 14-5 in the early going and held a 21-10 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half. Drexel began chipping away and closed the half on a 13-5 run to make it a one-point game.
Drexel continues conference play at home on Saturday when William & Mary visits the DAC at 4 p.m.
