Field Hockey Topped at No. 24 Fairfield in Finale

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Drexel University field hockey team (4-14) ended its season with a 3-1 loss on the road to No. 24 Fairfield University (16-2) on Sunday afternoon from Fairfield, Conn.
The Dragons struck first in the finale, 5:45 into the second quarter after a scoreless first period. Senior Tess Horan notched her fifth goal of the campaign on a feed from sophomore Puk Thewessen. Horan finishes the year tied for a team-high five goals. Thewessen's assist came as her sixth of the year as she owns a team-best 14 points followed by Horan with 12.
The No. 24-ranked team in the country evened the score a few minutes later, midway through the second quarter as Emma Matlach made a pass to Page Lowry who was able to finish.
With 38 seconds left to play in the half, Lowry added her second of the day to give the Stags a 2-1 edge at the break.
Still trailing 2-1 late in the fourth quarter, Drexel pulled its goalkeeper, freshman Megan Hadfield, in favor of the extra attacker for the final 4:47. Fairfield's Matlach scored a goal with 3:25 left in the affair on the empty cage as the Stags won by the 3-1 final.
Drexel managed 16 shots to Fairfield's 14 on the day. The Dragons also led corner opportunities, 11-6. Hadfield made six saves and allowed two goals.
