Tampa, Fla. – USF used a late 16-0 run in the second half to open up a close game and defeat Drexel at the Yuengling Center on Sunday afternoon, 81-61. Drexel held a lead midway through the second half, but the Bulls (6-4) held Drexel to just one field goal over the last nine minutes to take control of the game. The Dragons fell to 5-6 on the season.
The Dragons took a two-point lead when Camren Wynter nailed a three-pointer at the 9:40 mark to go ahead 54-52. Unfortunately for the Dragons, that would be their last field goal for a span of more than eight minutes.
Zach Walton, making his first start of the season, scored a team-high 21 points. Wynter added 19 points and five assists. Coletrane Washington and Sam Green each added two three-pointers and eight points.
David Collins scored his 1,000th career point for USF and led the Bulls with 23 points. Laquincy Rideau had a season-high 19 points.
The Dragons trailed by as many as nine points early as the Bulls made nine of their first 11 shots from the floor. Drexel chipped away and took a one-point lead on a Camren Wynter bucket after the sophomore picked up the steal and went the length of the court. USF answered with a Justin Brown three-pointer to take the lead back and went into the locker room with a 35-33 lead. Wynter had nine points in the first half to lead Drexel. Laquincy Rideau had 13 points for USF.
The Dragons had their chances but committed 12 of their 19 turnovers in the second half. They also sank just 12 of their 23 free throw attempts.
Drexel will play its final two games before the holiday break next weekend in Atlantic City. The Dragons face Quinnipiac on Friday. They will face either Norfolk State or Bowling Green on Saturday.
