ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Matey Juric scored 11 points in the second half as Drexel defeated Quinnipiac, 73-62. With the win, the Dragons (6-6) advanced to the Boardwalk Battle championship game against either Bowling Green or Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. Camren Wynter led Drexel with 19 points, while James Butler grabbed 14 rebounds in the win.
The teams were tied at 49 when Juric nailed a three-pointer at the 7:27 mark to give Drexel the lead for good. That started a personal run of eight straight points for the sophomore, sandwiched around a bank shot by Quinnipiac's Rich Kelly. It gave the Dragons a six point lead with 4:11 to play. Drexel was able to extend the lead to eight in the final two minutes
and sealed the game by making free throws down the stretch.
Drexel's defense held the Bobcats (4-5) without a field goal for a stretch of almost four minutes as they took the lead for good. The Dragons held Quinnipiac to just 40 percent shooting in the game, and just 33 percent (9-for-27) from long range.
Wynter had a solid all-around game once again for Drexel. He had eight assists and six rebounds. Freshman Mate Okros went 4-for-4 from long range and had a career-high 14 points. The Dragons made 10 three-pointers in the game and handed out 17 assists to only nine turnovers.
Kelly led Quinnipiac with 18 points. Kevin Marfo grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. Aaron Falzon chipped in with 12 points, all of them coming on three-pointers.
The first half was back and forth as the teams played at a high pace for most of the half. In fact, there were no stoppages in play for more than five minutes at one point. Drexel opened the game with a pair of three-pointers by Okros, and that turned out to be the only run of more than five points for either team in the half. Sam Green's late three-pointer trimmed the Bobcats' lead to one with a minute to go and that's how the teams went to intermission.
Drexel will face either Norfolk State or Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon in the championship game at 4:30 p.m.
