Atlantic City, N.J. – The Drexel men's basketball team led from start to finish on its way to the Boardwalk Battle Championship. The Dragons (7-6) defeated Norfolk State at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, 53-49. Camren Wynter was named the Most Valuable Player.
Drexel opened up a commanding 15-point lead midway through the second half and held off a late Norfolk State run. The Spartans turned up the defensive intensity and held Drexel without a field goal for the final 5:21. However, the Dragons defense was just as tough, as it held the Spartans to just 49 points, the lowest total of any opponent this season. Norfolk was also limited to just 1-for-13 from deep.
Sam Green and James Butler each scored 10 points to lead Drexel. Butler picked up yet another double-double, his eighth of the season, with 13 rebounds. Wynter, who was saddled with foul trouble in the first half, came on in the second half and made a huge difference. The sophomore had nine points and six assists.
Joe Bryant played well for the Spartans, scoring 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting. Steven Whitley added 13 points.
With the win, Drexel improved to 7-6 on the season. It is the most non-conference wins the team has had since the 2013-14 season.
The teams played a hard-fought first half, but points were at a premium. Both teams struggled from the floor. Drexel shot just 27 percent in the first half while Norfolk finished the first 20 minutes at 24 percent. The teams combined for 21 fouls. Drexel made just one of 11 three-point attempts, while the Spartans missed all six on their long-range attempts. Zach Walton led all players with seven points. Tyrese Jenkins had six points for Norfolk State.
The Dragons will be off until Dec. 28, when they open CAA play with a game against the College of Charleston. It will be the first of three straight home games, all coming in league play.
