PHILADELPHIA - Grant Riller scored a game-high 22 points as the College of Charleston defeated Drexel, 76-65, in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The Cougars (7-6) used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to take the lead for good and held on despite a late run by the Dragons (7-7).
The Cougars led by 11 at intermission and increased their lead to as many as 16 in the second half. The Dragons scored nine straight points and used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to just six points with just under three minutes to play. However, the Cougars got two three-pointers in their next three possessions, the first by Jaylen McManus and the next by Zep Jasper, as they held on for the road victory.
Camren Wynter led the Dragons with 21 points. The sophomore made three three-pointers and added four assists and four steals. James Butler picked up yet another double-double. The junior had 18 points and 13 rebounds. He was also 7-for-11 from the floor in recording his ninth double-double of the year. Sam Green had a solid game for the Dragons, going 3-for-6 from long range with 14 points.
Riller, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, was 9-for-16 from the floor and finished with 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. The Cougars came into the game averaging just 6.4 three-pointers per game and shooting 31 percent from deep. On Saturday, it was a different story. Charleston was 11-for-20 (.550) from deep and had multiple three-pointers from four players. Brevin Galloway made four and finished the game with 16 points. Sam Miller added 13 points and was perfect in three long-range attempts, while Jasper chipped in with two more and had 12 points to go along with a game-high six assists.
Drexel returns to action on Monday night when UNCW makes its annual visit. It will be the second of three straight league home games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for the Dragons.
