Comeback Bid Falls Short for Men's Basketball against La Salle
12/7/2019 4:31:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel Men's Basketball made a late charge but could not overtake city rival La Salle in a 71-63 loss at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. The Dragons (5-5) lost for the first time at home during the 2018-19 season as the Explorers avenged last season's loss at Gola Arena.
The Explorers (5-3) scored the first eight points of the game and led 18-4 nine minutes into the game. Drexel responded with seven straight points, but La Salle answered by going on a 10-0 run to take a 17-point lead. La Salle shot 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes and took a 38-23 lead to the locker room. Drexel struggled from the floor, making just eight field goals, and turned the ball over 11 times in the first half.
La Salle held a comfortable lead for the first eight minutes of the second half before the Dragons made it a game. When James Butler sank a three-pointer as the shot clock wound down, the Dragons found themselves down by just nine with 9:22 to play. Drexel scored six straight at one point, capped by a Camren Wynter three-point opportunity with 2:04 to go, to cut it to 63-59. Wynter missed the free throw, and the Explorers scored the next five points to come away with the win in head coach Ashley Howard's return to the DAC. Howard played, graduated and coached at Drexel.
Zach Walton had a solid game for the Dragons, leading the team with 19 points. He gave La Salle fits most of the afternoon and drew nine fouls. James Butler finished with another double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Wynter scored 11, grabbed six rebounds and had five assists. The Dragons shot just 34 percent from the floor in the game.
La Salle once again had a balanced offensive attack. Five players scored at least 10 points. David Beatty scored 14 points to lead the way, while Saul Phiri added 12 and Scott Spencer had 11.
The Dragons will be taking finals for the next week before returning to the court next Sunday at South Florida.
