Win Streak Ends in 3OT for Women's Basketball, 77-72

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's basketball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to a gut-wrenching end on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center as the Dragons fell to William & Mary in triple overtime, 77-72. The Dragons (20-6, 12-3) had the ball with chances to win at the end of regulation and the first overtime period as well a a possession with less than 10 seconds to play in double overtime and the score tied, but could not get it done on a tough shooting night that saw Drexel make just two of 28 attempts from beyond the arc.
Bailey Greenberg led the Dragons with 24 points, pulling herself into a tie with Rachel Pearson (2012-16) for 17th place on the Dragons' all-time list with 1,136 career points. Greenberg added eight rebounds and a career high eight steals while playing all 55 minutes of action. Her eight steals were the most any Dragon has had in a game during the Denise Dillon era. The last player with eight steals was Katrina Martin against VCU on Jan. 26, 2003.
Niki Metzel finished with a career high 21 points before fouling out in the second overtime period. All but two of her points came after halftime asa she added eight rebounds and three assists. Like Metzel, Aubree Brown was 5-for-5 from the free throw line to help her put up 13 points with five boards and three assists. Hannah Nihill and Keishana Washington each scored five points while Ana Ferariu added four. Mariah Leonard had two assists.
As a team, the Dragons shot just 33.7 percent from the floor, knocking down 28 of 83 attempts. Drexel was 2-for-9 from beyond the arc in the first half, but did not connect on any of its 18 attempts after halftime.
The game stands as one of the three longest in program history, joining an NCAA record five-overtime 98-90 victory over Northeastern on Feb. 22, 2007, and a triple-overtime 79-73 win over UNCW on Jan. 9, 2005. It is just the second time in program history that the Dragons lost a game that went to multiple overtime periods. They are 6-1 all-time in double overtime, with that loss also coming at the hands of William & Mary, 72-68 at the DAC on Feb. 6, 2015.
After Drexel never led in the first overtime, tying it on a pair of Metzel free throws following an offensive rebound with 11 seconds to go, William & Mary never led in the second overtime period. Still, the Tribe knotted it when Bianca Boggs, who finished with a game-high 32 points, hit one of two from the line with 36 seconds to play in that period. Drexel turned the ball over late in the shot clock in the ensuing possession, but the Tribe could not connect on a last-second three as the game went to a third overtime period.
Ferariu put Drexel in front to start the third overtime, but William & Mary rattled off six straight to take a 74-70 lead with 1:16 to play. A pair of Greenberg free throws with 28 ticks left pulled the Dragons back within two, and William & Mary missed three of its next four free throws to give the Dragons a pair of opportunities to tie things up. But neither three rattled home and William & Mary was finally able to connect from the line with two seconds remaining, locking down the victory.
The loss ends Drexel's winning streak at 12 games, a streak that had been the third-longest in program history after a pair of 16-gamers in 1989-90 and 2008-09.
The Dragons will have little time to recover from Friday's loss as they welcome in Elon on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day in the home finale at 2 p.m. The game will be preceded by the Senior Day ceremony approximately 15 minutes before the opening tip.
