Rowing Wins Two Races at Weather-Shortened Murphy Cup Regatta

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Drexel men's and women's rowing teams closed out an abbreviated racing schedule on Saturday, March 23 at the 37th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The day was highlighted by two wins by the men. Due to deteriorating conditions, four races that the Dragons were scheduled to compete in were canceled.

MEN WIN 1V, 3V
The Dragons, in the Lois Krall II, took first place in the grand finals of the Varsity 8+ with a time of 5:57.56. Drexel edged out the next closest competitor, Marist (6:01.26), by just over three seconds.

In the Sandra Lee Sheller II, Drexel also won the 3rd Varsity 8+ finals, crossing the finish at 6:06.85 before Temple (B, 6:20.70) by almost 14 seconds.

In the JV 8+ Petite Final, the Dragons (6:19.32) finished second behind Bucknell (6:17.98).

WOMEN TAKES SECOND IN 1V,THIRD IN 2V
The women only completed two races on Saturday due to the deteriorating and windy conditions. In the Varsity 8+ Grand Final, Drexel claimed third place with a time of 6:48.24 in the Alleva XVII, finishing behind Penn (6:42.79) and North Carolina (6:44.82).

In the JV 8+ Grand Final, the women placed second of six boats as the Cara Fry posted a time of 6:49.09 with Penn (6:47.17) taking first.

NEXT UP
The Drexel women's rowing team returns to the Cooper River tomorrow, Sunday, March 24 for the Cooper Sprints. Heats begin at 8:18 a.m. with the finals starting at 10:54 a.m.
