Men's Tennis Comes Up Short at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Drexel men's tennis team came up short at the College of Charleston on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the host Cougars 5-2. Xandy Hammitt and Youssef Lahlou claimed singles victories for the Dragons, but it was not enough.

The Dragons went toe-to-toe with Charleston doubles, where Sinan Orhon and Gustav Wogen won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-4. Drexel lost at No. 2, but Lahlou and Juan Manuel Sanchez pushed the No. 3 Charleston team to a tiebreak, where the Cougars escaped with the doubles point, 7-6 (5).

Despite the loss of the doubles point, singles play got off to a good start for Drexel when Hammitt wrapped up a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 to put the Dragons on the board. The Cougars would go on to capture the next three matches to finish, however, clinching the overall match before Lahlou won 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Orhon also went three sets at No. 1 and Sanil Jagtiani did the same at No. 3, but neither could put the finishing touches on the points for Drexel.

The Dragons will remain on the road for their next match, which gets underway on Friday at UNCW at 3 p.m.
