Cunningham Ties for Medalist Honors as Dragons Place Second at Explorer Invitational

GLENSIDE, Pa. - Jeffrey Cunningham tied for the top spot overall as Drexel finished in second place at the Explorer Invitational held at LuLu Country Club on Monday. Cunningham fired a four-over-par 146 in difficult conditions over 36 holes on the par-71 course that played to 6,624 yards. Sophomores Stephen Cerbara and Angelo Giantsopoulos each finished in the top 10 for the Dragons.
Villanova won the event by shooting 592, three shots better than the Dragons. The Wildcats played well in the morning and had an 11-stroke lead over Drexel, but the Dragons turned it on over the final 18 holes. The Dragons had the best second round of the day, firing a 294, but it wasn't enough to catch Villanova. Temple was third with a score of 599, while La Salle placed fourth at 608. The field was rounded out by Navy (612), Navy B (615), Temple B (634) and Niagara (657).
Cunningham had a 73 in both rounds at Lulu. It was his first collegiate victory as he tied with Matt Davis of Villanova. Cerbara and Giantsopoulos each shot 75 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon. The duo tied for sixth overall on the day. Connor Schmidt rounded out the Drexel scoring with a 153, while senior Michael Cook carded a 158. Junior Alex Butler played as an individual and opened with a 75 and finished with a 78.
The Dragons will close the 2019 spring season at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The three-day event will begin on April 19, 2019 in Pinehurst, N.C. The teams will play three rounds on Pinehurst No. 8.
