Greek Tour 2019: Arrival in Athens

ATHENS, Greece - A long travel day fed into a short stroll around the most famous landmark in the ancient city of Athens on Friday as the Dragons got their first glimpse of the Acropolis after flying in from Newark International Airport.

Drexel's travel party made the short journey up the New Jersey Turnpike to Newark, where they caught an Emirates flight direct to the capital of Greece. The nine-hour journey had them departing just after midnight on Friday morning Eastern time, and landing at 3 p.m. in Greece. After gathering luggage, the team met their tour guide, Joanna Venieri, and made the 40-minute journey to their hotel in the city.

After a short break to unpack and unwind, the team met for dinner in the hotel restaurant. Following that buffet meal, Venieri led the Dragons through the Athens subway system to the Acropolis, where the team got glimpses of the hilltop ruins as they walked through a marketplace that lined the streets of the hill. The team got free time to make souvenir purchases and sample some of the Greek food for sale along the route, then returned to the hotel to rest up for their first full day of touring on Saturday.

The Dragons will return to the Acropolis on Saturday for an official tour of the site. They will also visit the first stadium to host the modern Olympics, Panathinaiko Stadium, and will visit other historic sites in Athens as the day progresses. Saturday will also include the first of three games for Drexel on the tour as they take on a collection of Greek national program players in Athens. Fans can follow along via the CAASports Instagram feed, where sophomores Kate Connolly, Maura Hendrixson and Keishana Washington will be participating in a takeover throughout the day.
