THESSALONIKI, Greece - The basketball end of the Drexel women's basketball team's tour of Greece has come to a close, as the Dragons scored a commanding 92-37 victory over a select team of players from northern Greek squads.
The Dragons forced 36 turnovers by the Greek team and made 39 field goals, four more than their opponents attempted. Brianne Borcky led the balanced scoring attack with 12. In total, seven different players scored at least eight points. Keishana Washington netted 11, Kate Connolly added 10, Ana Ferariu scored nine and Hetta Saatman, Aubree Brown and Hannah Nihill each added eight. Nihill led the way with five steals and seven assists, while Ferariu chipped in four steals. In totatl, 11 of Drexel's 13 players had at least one steal.
The Dragons led nearly wire-to-wire, but put the game largely out of reach in the second quarter. There, the team held the Greek squad to just three points on 1-of-9 shooting. The Dragons forced 11 turnovers in the quarter and used runs of 9-0 and 12-0 to pull away. Drexel also scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to add to its lead.
Following the win, the Dragons returned to Chalkidiki for a final night in the seaside region of Greece. On Friday morning, the team packed up and returned to Athens by way of Thessaloniki. Despite playing two games in the city, the Dragons had not yet gotten a chance to explore the town that was named for a sister of Alexander the Great and played host to St. Paul as he spread early Christianity throughout the region.
The team took in breathtaking views from the largely-intact north wall of the town near the city's citadel. Once a completely walled-in city, Thessaloniki's walls have mostly been destroyed, but the north wall largely remains, as does the White Tower that was part of the wall near the port. Drexel also saw some of the city's important religious sites, as it has been home to Muslims, Jews and Christians in the area for thousands of years.
Back in Athens, the team checked into its hotel for the night after a dinner highlighted by thank you messages to tour guide Joanna Venieri delivered by head coach Denise Dillon, associate head coach Amy Mallon and junior Kayla Bacon. The Dragons will have the opportunity to explore Athens one final time in the morning and early afternoon before heading back to the airport for the return to the United States.
