PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (1-6) dropped a narrow road nonconference contest to its crosstown rival, the Temple University Owls (4-2), by a final of 3-2 from Howarth Field.
The Dragons hung close with the Owls on Sunday afternoon but could not even the score late after Temple scored twice in the third quarter.
The Owls' Dani Batze scored the first goal of the affair about six minutes into play, 1-0.
On a Drexel corner, sophomore Puk Thewessen took a shot from the top of the circle that fellow sophomore Avery Powell deflected in to even the score midway through the second quarter, 1-1.
The Dragons managed nine shots in the second quarter and 10 in the first half to Temple's two as they held the Owls without a shot in the second quarter. The score was tied 1-1 at the break.
Temple scored on both of its shot attempts in the third quarter to take a two-goal edge, 3-1. Kathryn Edgar came away with the Owls' second goal of the day while Claire Thomas put away the third.
Senior Katie Bagdon got the Dragons back within one with 10 minutes to play after converting a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season.
Bagdon's goal came as Drexel's last scoring opportunity as the Dragons could not capitalize in the final minutes of regulation as Temple's Edgar was issued a two-minute green card with 2:30 to play.
The Owls held on for the 3-2 win.
DU led shots, 18-7, shots on goal, 7-4, and penalty corners, 10-6.
