Women’s Basketball Erases 15-Point Deficit for OT Win at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (8-6, 1-1 CAA) erased a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat the UNCW Seahawks (4-9, 1-1 CAA) by a final of 73-72 in overtime from the Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C. It comes as the Dragons' first Colonial Athletic Association win of the year.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Drexel trailed by 13 heading into the fourth quarter before using a pair of runs to outscore the Seahawks 24-11 over the final 10 minutes to force overtime.
* Senior Bailey Greenberg finished with 22 points including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line. She also had four assists.
* With her third point of the day, Greenberg became the 10th Dragon with 1,500 career points. She is now tied for 8th place on Drexel's all-time scoring list.
* Senior Niki Metzel tallied 15 points and nine boards on the day.
* Senior Mariah Leonard scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting with four rebounds.
* Senior Aubree Brown dished out eight assists and had six points.
* UNCW's GiGi Smith finished with a game-high 32 points behind 9-of-17 shooting, 4-of-5 from three-point range and 10-of-13 from the line.

Q1 /
The Dragons had some trouble finding their shot early as UNCW had a 9-4 lead with 4:24 to go in the period after a pair of free throws and a Washington jumper. Greenberg knocked down a three-pointer with 3:53 to play as she reached 1,500 career points, the 10th in program history to reach that figure, 9-7. The senior hit four free throws in the quarter but Drexel would not make another field goal after the trey as the Seahawks had a 16-9 edge after 10 minutes of action.

Following a UNCW three-pointer from GiGi Smith to push its lead to 12, Drexel called timeout with 6:44 to go in the quarter. The Seahawks were able to take a 14-point advantage, forcing another DU timeout with 3:34 on the clock, 30-16. Smith connected on her fourth three-pointer to make it 33-18 before Brown responded with a straightaway trey as the Dragons trailed 33-21 at halftime.
UNCW's Smith had 18 points at the break with six field goals while going 4-of-4 from deep. Greenberg led the Dragons with nine points. Drexel only managed to make six field goals after 20 minutes, two in the first and four in the second.

Following a three-point play from Smith to give the Seahawks their largest lead of the day at 15, a 7-0 run helped Drexel trim the deficit down to eight with 7:11 on the clock as UNCW called its first timeout, 36-28. Greenberg picked up her fourth foul with 4:05 left in the period and went to the bench as the Seahawks led by 13. The lead held as UNCW owned a 49-36 edge heading into the fourth quarter.

The Dragons were able to get it down to nine following two Metzel foul shots, 49-40. Drexel then used runs of 7-0 and 9-0 which combined for a 16-2 stretch to get a three-point advantage, 56-53. The game was tied 60-60 at the end of regulation after Drexel outscored UNCW 24-11 in the final quarter.
OT /
Greenberg scored four points in overtime before fouling out. Metzel scored six of her 15 on the day in the OT period to help secure the victory. Following two made free throws by Metzel to give Drexel a 73-70 advantage, UNCW made a layup and was fouled on the other end with 1.6 seconds left. UNCW's Smith missed the foul shot as Metzel picked up her ninth and final rebound for the Drexel win.

* Drexel shot 41.8% (23-of-55) from the floor, 38.5% (5-of-13) from three-point range and 81.5% (22-of-27) from the foul line.
* UNCW shot 49.0% (25-of-51) from the field, 53.8% (7-of-13) from deep and 78.9% (15-of-19) from the free-throw line.
* Drexel scored 30 points off the bench compared to UNCW's 11.
