PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University, in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, has been named as the co-host of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center. It is the first time Drexel has been a co-host of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
In addition, Drexel was selected to host the 2023 and 2024 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships at Lincoln Financial Field.
"Drexel Athletics is proud to host and assist in securing the winning bid for the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships for Philadelphia and the Wells Fargo Center," Director of Athletics, and PHL Sports Vice Chair, Dr. Eric Zillmer said. "Wrestling has deep roots in the Philadelphia area and is a sport important to Drexel Athletics. To have a national championship decided right here at the Wells Fargo Center is something we are very much looking forward to hosting. We are proud of the leadership put forth by Mert '67 and Joanne '69 Hill Head Coach of Wrestling Matt Azevedo on the NCAA Wrestling Committee, and are grateful for our partners at PHL Sports and the University of Pennsylvania as we once again bring an NCAA Championship to a world-class sports-destination city like Philadelphia."
The Wells Fargo Center recently completed a $265M renovation project, which significantly upgraded the fan experience with numerous amenities throughout the venue. Most visible is the world's first center-hung 4K Kinetic video board, which is 65% larger than the previous version.
The three-day event is making just its second appearance in Philadelphia. The 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships were also held at the Wells Fargo Center. More than 104,000 people were in attendance over the six-session event that saw Penn State win its second NCAA Championship. Last season's championship was scheduled to take place at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. However, that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
