Women’s Basketball Defeats Rider in Season Opener Behind Nihill’s Career High

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (1-0) defeated the Rider University Broncs (0-2) from Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J. by a final of 62-49 on Saturday afternoon in the Dragons' 2020-21 season opener.
HIGHLIGHTS
* After shooting 7.1% in the first quarter, the Dragons found their rhythm in the second quarter, shooting 9-of-15, to take a 27-23 edge into halftime.
* The Dragons trailed by as many as 11 points before winning by 13.
* Head Coach Amy Mallon picked up a win in her Drexel head coaching debut, her first DI victory.
* After starting 0-of-6 from the floor, Hannah Nihill finished the game by shooting 7-of-13, establishing a new career high with 22 points, good for a game high as well. Nihill hit three three-pointers and went 5-of-7 from the line. She also notched three rebounds and three assists.
* Keishana Washington scored 12 points on the day to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
* Hetta Saatman grabbed a game- and career-high nine rebounds in the win. She also hit a shot and went 3-of-4 from the line for five points.
* Juniors Kate Connolly and Maura Hendrixson finished with eight and seven points, respectively. Connolly added three assists, one rebound and one steal. Hendrixson also recorded a game-high four steals, two rebounds and two assists.
* Senior Kayla Bacon scored four points and collected five rebounds off the bench.
* Freshmen Jasmine Valentine and Erin Sweeney both made their debuts for the Dragons. Valentine scored four points with four rebounds.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Connolly started the game with a field goal for the Dragons off the elbow. Rider then went on a 10-0 run to take the game into a media timeout with 4:44 to play, 10-2. Drexel struggled shooting in the quarter, going 0-of-13 following Connolly's make. Hendrixson and Connolly went 4-of-4 at the line as the period finished with Rider leading Drexel, 13-6.

Drexel used a 14-0 run to get back in the game, taking the lead, 16-13. Rider got within one before Nihill scored the next seven points for DU to put the Dragons up 27-21. Drexel took a 27-23 halftime score into the break. The Dragons outscored Rider, 21-10, in the second on 9-of-15 shooting.

Rider regained the lead with a three-pointer from Amanda Mobley with 5:33 to play, 33-31, part of a 9-0 run for the Broncs. Washington and Nihill ended the Rider scoring streak by knocking down a pair of treys to put Drexel back ahead, 37-35. Nihill scored nine points in the third period to reach a new career high with 18 points through only 30 minutes of action.

Washington made a layup with 7:59 to play, pushing the Dragons' lead to double digits for the first time as Rider called a timeout, 47-37. Following a jumper from Bacon with 5:34 to go, the Dragons went back up by double digits, 51-50, after Rider trimmed it down to seven. Drexel held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest as Nihill finished with a game- and career-high 22 points.

* Drexel led the rebound battle, 33-28, which included 16 offensive rebounds for the Dragons.
* DU forced 23 Rider turnovers and capitalized on those miscues, outscoring the Broncs 28-7 in points off turnovers.
* Drexel shot 36.8% (21-of-57) from the floor, 35.3% (6-of-17) from three-point range and 66.7% (14-of-21) from the foul line.
* Rider shot 42.9% (15-of-35) from the field, 44.4% (4-of-9) from beyond the arc and 62.5% (15-of-24) from the free-throw line.
