PHILADELPHIA – La Salle closed the game on an 8-1 run and held off Drexel, 58-48, on Saturday afternoon in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons rallied from an 18-point deficit and got to within a point twice midway through the second half, but the Explorers (2-3) were able to hold on for the win. The loss snapped Drexel's three-game winning streak.
With Drexel trailing by just one at 42-41, Jhamir Brickus nailed a 3-pointer to put La Salle up by three with a little more than eight minutes to play. The Dragons then committed a shot clock violation and, on the Explorers next possession, Brickus hit another trey to stretch the lead to seven. Drexel was able to make it a one-possession game when Camren Wynter's lay-up with 5:26 to go cut the lead to 50-47dunder 11 minutes to play. That would be Drexel's final field goal of the contest.
Wynter led Drexel with 15 points. The junior finished 5-for-15 from the floor. Zach Walton was the only other Dragon in double figures in scoring with 10 points. The Dragons, who had been shooting the ball well from behind the arc as of late, struggled all day from deep. They made just three of their 20 3-point attempts. Overall, Drexel shot 33 percent in the game and committed 16 turnovers.
Anwar Gill came off the bench to lead La Salle with 15 points. David Beatty chipped in with 11 points. Jack Clark, La Salle's leading scorer was held to seven points, but the redshirt sophomore snared a game-high 13 rebounds.
La Salle seemed to break open the game midway through the first half. The Explorers went on an 18-2 run to take a commanding 26-8 lead. The Dragons at one point missed 14 straight shots and went more than 11 minutes without a field goal. However, the last three minutes of the half were a different story. The Dragons closed the half on a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 32-23 at the half. The La Salle defense held Drexel to just 25 percent shooting and the Dragons made just one of their nine long-range attempts. The Explorers shot 54 percent in the opening stanza, but their 10 turnovers kept the Dragons in the game.
Drexel will host Saint Joseph's at the DAC on Thursday night. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday. It will tip-off at 6 p.m. and can be seen live on NBC Sports Philadelphia+.
