HACKENSACK, N.J. – Camren Wynter exploded for 31 points as Drexel picked up a road victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon, 85-68. The Dragons won for the fifth time in the last six games and improved their record to 5-2 on the season. They are off to their best seven-game start since the 2013-14 team started the year 7-2.
Wynter was spectacular all afternoon. The junior was 12-for-16 from the floor and made five of his seven 3-point attempts. Wynter became the 38th player in Drexel history to reach the 1,000-point mark with a free throw early in the second half. James Butler added 15 points and had seven rebounds. T.J. Bickerstaff was in double figures for the sixth time in seven games with 13 points.
Drexel shot 53 percent from the floor, its best shooting performance of the young season. The 85 points were also a season-high and marked the second straight game the Dragons scored 80 or more. On the other end of the court, the defense forced 17 turnovers and limited the Knights on the boards. Drexel out-rebounded FDU by 11.
For the second straight game, Drexel got solid contributions from the bench. Freshman Lamar Oden, Jr. grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, while Matey Juric handed out a team-high four assists and had a pair of steals. Freshman Amari Williams contributed five rebounds in just six minutes.
FDU (1-6) opened the second half with five-straight points to take the lead, but that was short lived. Drexel answered with a 12-0 run as four different Dragons scored during the stretch. The lead swelled to as many as 19 points as the Dragons put the game out of reach midway through the second half. Drexel took care of the ball much better in the second half, committing just five turnovers despite the Knights' continuous pressure. Wynter had 18 of his 31 points in the final 20 minutes.
The Knights were led by Jahlil Jenkins who scored 18 points, Elyjah Williams score 16 and was 7-for-9 shooting. FDU sank eight 3-pointers, the most of any Drexel opponent this season.
The Dragons were scheduled to face Siena on Tuesday afternoon, but that game was canceled. If the Dragons are unable to schedule another game for early next week, they won't return to action until Jan. 2 when conference play begins against UNCW. Any updates to the schedule will be posted to Drexeldragons.com.
