UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The Drexel men's basketball went on a 14-0 run late in the first half and never looked back on its way to a convincing 66-48 win against Quinnipiac at Mohegan Sun on Wednesday night. The Dragons picked up their first victory of the young season (1-1) and had one of their best defensive efforts in recent memory. They held the Bobcats to just four field goals in the first half and cruised to victory in the Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-Off.
The outcome was never in doubt in the second half. Quinnipiac couldn't cut the lead to under 14 points after intermission. Drexel knocked down seven three-pointers and shot 44 percent from behind the arc in the game. They defended the three well the entire night. The Bobcats didn't make a three-pointer the entire first half and finished the game just 1-for-12 from long range. Defensively, Drexel took Quinnipiac out of their game from the outset. The Bobcats turned the ball over 17 times, which led to 22 Drexel points.
Camren Wynter scored 17 points to lead Drexel. The junior also handed out five assists and had four rebounds. Zach Walton added 13 points, all of them coming in the first half. Walton was efficient as he shot 3-for-6 from the floor and made all five of his free throw attempts. T.J. Bickerstaff was in double figures for the second straight game. He had 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. James Butler grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for DU. Drexel Head Coach Zach Spiker was able to get his entire bench into the game, which should help the team tomorrow with a short turn around. The same two teams will play at 2 p.m. on Thursday. Only one Dragon (Wynter) played more than 27 minutes and Spiker was able to get a good look at his bench during the game. First-year player Lamar Oden, Jr. scored six points in 17 minutes, while fellow freshman Xavier Bell added five points.
Savion Lewis had 14 points to lead the Bobcats. Quinnipiac finished just 34 percent from the floor. No other Quinnipiac player had more than six points.
Each team got off to a slow start in the first half as the Dragons led 13-11 with a little more than eight minutes to play. However, Drexel's offense started clicking at the same time the defense turned up the intensity. The Dragons held Quinnipiac without a field goal for a span of more than nine minutes as they increased their lead to 36-18 at intermission. Quinnipiac was held to just 4-for-20 shooting in the first half. The four field goals were the lowest Drexel has held a team in a half under Spiker and the lowest total since the Dragons held Georgia State to four back in the 2012-13 season. Drexel also forced 12 Bobcat turnovers in the first half. Drexel made eight of their final 10 shots of the half after a tough start from the floor to finish the first 20 minutes shooting 55 percent.
Drexel now holds a 7-1 lead in the all-time series with the Bobcats. It was the Dragons' seventh-straight win against Quinnipiac after they lost the first meeting back during the 2002-03 season.
