UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Camren Wynter had a game-high 23 points, and James Butler added 15 as Drexel defeated Quinnipiac, 70-58, at the Air Force Reserve Hall of Fame Tip-Off on Thursday afternoon at Mohegan Sun. The Dragons head back to Philadelphia with a 2-1 record after picking up a pair of wins against the Bobcats (1-2) in Bubbleville.
Drexel once again controlled the game from the outset. On Thursday, the Bobcats stuck around and stayed within reach of the Dragons, but Drexel did not relinquish the lead in the second half. Quinnipiac cut the Drexel second-half margin to four on three occasions early in the half, but Drexel answered and pulled away by scoring eight of the game's final 10 points.
Wynter was solid all afternoon. The CAA Player of the Year candidate scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half. He also added seven assists, which moved him into Drexel's top 10 in career assists. Butler was 3-for-6 from the floor and made all but one of his free throw attempts. The graduate student also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds despite some early foul trouble in the first half. Butler moved into Drexel's top 20 in career rebounds. He now has 676 career boards. T.J. Bickerstaff had his third straight game in double figures with 10 points. The sophomore also grabbed seven rebounds.
Drexel's offense was patient and took care of the basketball much better in the second meeting against the Bobcats. The Dragons shot 41 percent but more impressive was the fact that they handed out 14 assists while committing just seven turnovers. On the defensive end, Drexel held Quinnipiac to under 40 percent shooting for the second straight day, and the Bobcats made just five of their 17 long-range attempts. In the two games at Mohegan Sun, Drexel's defense allowed just six three-pointers in 29 attempts.
The first half on Thursday was much different than opening frame on Wednesday. Both teams played better on the offensive end, and the game went back and forth in the early going. Drexel scored the first eight points of the game and held the Bobcats off the board for the first four and a half minutes of play. Midway through the half, Quinnipiac went on an 8-0 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers, to take a 16-15 lead. That would be Quinnipiac's only lead of the half. Drexel was able to get the lead back up to eight points before another Bobcats' run made it a one-point affair with four seconds to go. Drexel got the ball in under its own basket as Wynter dribbled over half court. His long three-point attempt from the hash mark went down as the buzzer sounded, giving the Dragons a 34-30 lead at intermission. Wynter and Butler each had eight points at the half.
Tymu Chenery led Quinnipiac with 13 points. Seth Pinkney and Brendan McGuire each added 11 points. The Bobcats committed just 12 turnovers after making 17 miscues on Wednesday. The Bobcats attacked the lane more against the Dragons this afternoon and finished with 34 of their 58 points in the paint.
Drexel returns home and will host Coppin State on Sunday in a game sponsored by Gatorade. It will be the home opener at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Tip-off will be at 2 p.m., and the game can be seen live on NBC Sports Philadelphia+.
