Drexel Wins Home Opener against Coppin State, 69-54

PHILADELPHIA – All five starters scored in double figures as Drexel defeated Coppin State, 69-54. Camren Wynter led everyone with 15 points and six assists as Drexel won its home opener at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. It was the third straight win for the Dragons as they improved to 3-1. Coppin State is now 0-3.
The Eagles came out of the gate with a lot of energy and raced out to a quick 6-0 lead, causing Drexel to call timeout. It didn't take long for the Dragons to get back on track. With just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, Wynter knocked down a three-pointer to give Drexel the lead. Coppin State would not lead again. The Dragons took a 42-34 lead at intermission. That lead increased to double figures early in the second half and Drexel led by at least 10 points over the last eight minutes as they cruised to the victory.
Wynter led the balanced offensive attack with another solid game. The junior shot 6-for-12 from the floor, handed out six assists and had three steals. Mate Okros had his best game of the young year. The sophomore had 14 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. James Butler added 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while T.J. Bickerstaff and Zach Walton each scored 10 points. For Bickerstaff, it was his fourth straight game of at least 10 points.
Koby Thomas led Coppin State with 15 points. Drexel contained Anthony Tarke, who was held to just 11 points. He came into the game averaging 22 points per game.
Drexel's offense moved the ball well most of the game. The Dragons had 18 assists on their 25 field goals. In addition, the movement led to good open looks from behind the 3-point stripe. Drexel made nine of its 23 treys.
The Dragons held the Eagles to just 4-for-23 shooting from behind the arc (.174). Drexel also committed just 15 turnovers. Coppin State had forced 42 turnovers in its first two games against Duke and George Washington.
Drexel will be off for finals before returning to play next Saturday. The Dragons host La Salle at 2 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
