ELON, N.C. – Camren Wynter scored 23 points, but Elon held on to defeat the Dragons, 75-70, on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix (10-18, 6-9 CAA) made 12 three-pointers and won for the fourth time in its last five meetings. Drexel is now 13-14 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
In a game that was close the entire way, Elon took the lead for good with just under three minutes to play on a pair of Hunter McIntosh free throws. The Phoenix came up with a stop on the next possession and Marcus Sheffield hit a jump shot to put Elon ahead, 65-61 with 2:05 left on the clock. Drexel was unable to get any closer than two the rest of the way. The game featured nine lead changes and was tied on 10 different occasions.
Drexel's six-point halftime lead was erased in the first two minutes of the second half. Hunter Woods scored on a three-point play and then sank a three-pointer to even the game at 39. Zach Walton scored eight points in the early going of the second half as Drexel led by four with just under 15 minutes to go.
Both teams shot the ball well from behind the three-point stripe in the first half. The Dragons had their best half of the year from deep, knocking down seven of their nine attempts from deep. Wynter was especially effective, as the sophomore went 3-for-3 from long range and had 11 first-half points. Elon was 7-for-14 from behind the arc, but trailed at halftime, 37-31. Drexel shot 57 percent overall in the half.
Wynter finished the day 6-for-10 from the floor. He was perfect in eight attempts from the line and had a game-high six assists. Freshman Mate Okros was 3-for-3 from three-point territory and finished with 13 points. James Butler had his 17th double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Walton finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Sheffield, playing on Senior Day at the Schar Center, led everyone with 24 points. McIntosh added 18, while Woods chipped in with 14.
The Dragons return home for their final homestand of the season. Hofstra visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday night and Northeastern closes out the home schedule next Saturday.
