No. 7 Women’s Squash Edged by No. 6 Stanford in Howe Cup Consolation Semis

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The seventh-seeded Drexel women's squash team lost a nail-biting 5-4 match to No. 6 seed Stanford in the consolation semifinals of the Howe Cup on Saturday. The Cardinal (6-6) advance to Sunday's fifth-place match.
The Dragons (11-8) led 2-1 after the first round of matches. Alina Bushma secured another clean sweep, moving past Casey Wong with an 11-6, 11-1, 11-4 score in the No. 2 match, for her team-best 14th win of the season. In doing so, Bushma is now tied for the fourth-most victories in a single season at Drexel.
Stephanie Ryan added a sweep of her own in the No. 8 position. She handled Samantha Moadel, 13-11, 11-6, 11-5. Chloe Chemtob topped Ona Prokes in four games (11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-1) in the fifth-seeded flight.
Stanford tied the team score at 3-3 with two wins during the second round of matches. Lara Varma swept Julia Gillette in the No. 9 position, 11-6, 11-5, 11-3, but the Cardinal took the No. 3 and No. 4 matches.
Cassandra Ong and Caroline Neave both won in four games over Anna Hughes and Hannah Blatt, respectively. Hughes fell 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-4, and Blatt took the opener, 11-7, before 11-1, 11-7 and 11-3 losses.
Drexel won one of the final three matches. Ciara Richards and Amita Gondi went five games in the No. 6 match with Richards prevailing. The freshman found herself in an 11-8, 11-8 hole but staved off defeat with an 11-8 win of her own in the third game. From there she won 11-5 and 12-10 to take the match.
Karina Tyma lost in three games to Elena Wagenmans (11-7, 11-2, 11-7) in the top-flight match. Juliette Love defeated Brooke Herring in straight games (11-8, 11-4, 11-4) in the No. 7 position.
For the second year in a row the Dragons and Penn will play for seventh place in the Howe Cup bracket. That match is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday.
