Women’s Basketball Defeats Elon for 20th Win of Season, 13th-Straight Victory

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's basketball team (20-6, 13-1 CAA) dispatched the Elon University Phoenix (12-14, 7-8 CAA) on Sunday afternoon by a final of 66-47 from the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia. The win comes as Drexel's 20th of the campaign and the squad's 13th-straight victory as the team improved to 13-1 in league play.
HIGHLIGHTS
* Drexel's 20th win of 2019-20 gives the Dragons their fourth-straight 20-win season. The program now has nine 20-win campaigns including seven under head coach Denise Dillon. DU has had at least 20 wins in five of the last six seasons.
* 13 consecutive wins is the third longest winning streak in program history. Drexel won 16-straight games on two prior occasions, including 11 years ago under head coach Denise Dillon (Jan. 22, 2009 to March 15, 2009).
* Drexel used 11-0 runs in each the first and second quarters to own a 21-point edge at halftime, 34-13. It marked the third time in the last five games that DU held its opponent to 13 points or under at halftime following 11 points to each Hofstra (Feb. 7) and Delaware (Feb. 16).
* The Dragons held their largest lead of the game with 1:20 to play in the third quarter, up by 32 with the score 53-21.
* Drexel's last six wins have all been by double-digit margins.
* Three Dragons finished in double figures: Washington (16), Leonard (15) and Greenberg (10).
* Senior Mariah Leonard finished with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 5-of-8 from the line. She also tied for a game-high seven rebounds.
* Senior Aubree Brown notched her 500th career assist on the day, becoming just the third Dragon in program history to accomplish the feat. Brown recorded game-highs of seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals. The senior is three rebounds shy of becoming the first player in program history with at least 500 career points, rebounds and assists.
* Coming off her game-high 25-point effort in the OT win over William & Mary on Friday, sophomore Keishana Washington scored a game-high 16 points on Sunday to go alongside two assists and two steals. The sophomore shot 6-of-14 from the field including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
* Senior Bailey Greenberg scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting. It comes as her 23rd game on the season in double figures and the 87th of her career.
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Brown assisted on the first basket on the day, scored by Leonard, for her 500th career assist. Leonard helped start a 6-0 run that forced an Elon timeout with 6:10 to play in the period after a Greenberg three-pointer. Greenberg knocked down a second trey and Washington added a jumper to continue the run at 11-0 with the score 15-4 in favor of DU. Washington scored the final seven points for Drexel as the Dragons held a 14-point lead after 10 minutes, 20-6.

Elon's Perpignan scored the first basket of the quarter before another 11-0 run by DU put the Dragons up by 22, 31-9. That run included four points from Brown, a trey from Connolly and baskets from Bacon and Leonard. The Phoenix broke their eight-and-a-half minute scoring drought and reached a double-digit point total after Graves scored a layup with 1:23 until the half. Drexel held a 21-point lead at halftime, 34-13, after Washington drained her second three-pointer with under 30 seconds.

After allowing just 13 points to Elon in the first half, DU surrendered 14 points in the third quarter alone. The Dragons outscored Elon 10-3 in the opening 5:10 of the second half, taking the game to a media timeout with a 28-point advantage, 44-16. The Phoenix scored six of the final seven points in the third. Ana Ferariu finished with a third-quarter-high seven points in the period. Drexel was still doubling up Elon after 30 minutes, 54-27.

The fourth quarter marked the only period that Elon outscored Drexel, 20-14. Elon started the fourth on an 11-2 run to trim the Drexel edge down to 18. The Dragons then scored the 10 of the next 12 points to keep a healthy margin, 66-40. Elon finished the game on a 7-0 run as Drexel won, 66-47.

* The win comes as No. 598 in program history for Drexel. The Dragons are now 598-517 in 38 seasons.
* Drexel shot 45.5% (25-of-55) from the floor, 41.7% (5-of-12) from three-point range and 73.3% (11-of-15) from the foul line.
* Elon shot 41.0% (16-of-39) from the field, 44.4% (4-of-9) from beyond the arc and 73.3% (11-of-15) from the free-throw line.
* DU forced 25 Elon turnovers and capitalized on those miscues by outscoring Elon 30-12 in points off turnovers.
* The Dragons matched its season-high with 15 steals on the day (also 15 against UNCW on Jan. 5). Brown and senior Niki Metzel led the way with four each.
* Drexel also won the bench-scoring battle, 29-16.

The Dragons make their final regular-season road trip next weekend to visit James Madison University on Friday, Feb. 28 (7 p.m.) and Towson University on Sunday, March 1 (2 p.m.).
