Wynter Scores 24 Points in the loss for the Dragons
PHILADELPHIA – Towson rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Drexel, 76-69, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. The win snapped a five-game home winning streak for the Dragons (13-12, 6-6 CAA). The Tigers improved to 8-5 in league play and 14-11 overall.
The Tigers held Drexel to just six points over the first eight plus minutes of the second half and took their first lead since the opening minute at the 12:43 mark. T.J. Bickerstaff's pass was picked off by Charles Thompson and the big man went the length of the court for an emphatic dunk. The Dragons would stay close the rest of the way, but they would not retake the lead. Drexel was able to tie the game at 61-61 when Wynter hit a three-pointer with 3:50 to go. The score would remain the same until Dennis Tunstall scored on a put-back with 2:16 to go. That basket would start a 7-0 run. Wynter missed a jumper on the next possession, and, after what appeared to be a good Drexel defensive stand, Brian Fobbs drained a three-pointer from the top of the circle as the shot clock expired, giving the Tigers the sweep of the season series.
Allen Betrand, a local player who played at Roman Catholic, led the Tigers with a career-high 31 points. He was 10-for-16 overall and made three of his four long-range attempts. Fobbs added another 19 for Towson, who after a slow first half shot 52 percent over the final 20 minutes.
Wynter led Drexel with 24 points. The sophomore had three three-pointers and handed out four assists. Zach Walton scored 17 for the Dragons, while James Butler added 13. Drexel shot 45 percent in the game but was just 2-for-10 from deep in the second half. The Dragons made seven three-pointers in the game after knocking down 11 on Thursday against JMU.
Drexel will play four of its final six games on the road. The first two-game stretch begins on Thursday at William & Mary.
