Wynter has 24 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the loss
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary's Nathan Knight converted a three-point play with just 22 seconds to play as the Tribe held off Drexel in Kaplan Arena, 77-72.
Drexel cut the lead to one on a four-point play by Coletrane Washington with 47 seconds to go. The sophomore pump faked, got the Tribe's defender in the air and sank the long three from right in front of the Drexel bench. After the free throw, the Dragons trailed 71-70. On the ensuing possession, Knight went baseline past Tim Perry, Jr. was fouled and flung a reverse lay-up high off the backboard. The basket counted and Knight converted the old fashioned three-point play to put the Tribe ahead by four. Drexel came down court, but Knight blocked a Camren Wynter shot as the Tribe held off the Dragons to improve to 17-10 overall and 9-5 in CAA. Drexel is now 13-13 and 6-7 in the league.
William & Mary scored the first eight points of the game and did not trail in the game. The Tribe extended the lead to as many as 13 midway through the half before the Dragons started chipping away at the lead. Drexel had an 8-0 run and cut the lead to three when Matey Juric scored on a driving lay-up with 4:30 to play in the half. However, the Tribe answered with an 8-0 run of its own and entered the locker room with a 43-34 lead. Bryce Barnes had 14 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
Wynter had another outstanding offensive performance. The sophomore scored 24 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. It was his ninth 20-point performance of the year. Zach Walton scored 14 points, while Washington made four three-pointers and added 13 points. The Dragons shot 44 percent from the floor and made 10 of their 21 three-pointers. They also handed out 14 assists, while committing just nine turnovers. Drexel's bench helped keep the Dragons in the game, scoring 25 points.
Knight scored a game-high 28 points and was 12-for-17 from the line. The senior added seven rebounds and seven blocked shots. Barnes added 18, while Andy Van Vliet had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. The Tribe ended the game shooting 47 percent. They were held in check from deep, making only six of their 21 long-range attempts, but scored 38 points in the paint and sank 19 of their 27 free throw attempts.
The Dragons play one more game away from home before returning to Philadelphia. Drexel and Elon tip-off on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
