WASHINGTON, D.C. – The sixth-ranked Drexel women's squash team topped No. 10 Virginia, 7-2, in the de facto title match of the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference Championships. With the win, the Dragons (11-6) finish undefeated in round robin play and take home the Gaynor Cup as MASC champions.
Drexel was on the brink of victory after just four matches. The opening trio of Karina Tyma, Ciara Richards and Brooke Herring dropped just one combined game.
Tyma swept Emma Jinks in the top-flight match – 11-9, 11-4, 11-8. Richards added a sweep of her own against Emily Woodworth in the No. 5 match, winning 12-10, 11-5, 12-10.
Herring fell behind after an 11-4 loss in the opening game of the No. 7 match but rallied for three-straight wins (11-7, 11-6, 12-10).
Alina Bushma provided the fourth point with an 11-9, 11-2, 11-5 sweep of Maria Moya-Lopez in the No. 2 match.
The Cavaliers (15-5) staved off defeat with Julia Thompson's win over Ona Prokes in the No. 6 match, but Hannah Blatt provided the clinching point from the No. 3 position. Blatt won the first two games by 11-8 and 11-4 scores before an emphatic 11-1 result in the third game.
Drexel sprinted past the finish line with two more wins in the final three matches.
Anna Hughes won in four games (13-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6) against Sydney Maxwell in the No. 4 position. In doing so, she claimed sole possession of sixth place on the all-time wins list at Drexel with 37 career victories.
Stephanie Ryan rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in five games in the No. 8 match. Ryan took the opener, 11-9, but dropped the next two by identical 11-6 scores. The junior responded with 12-10 and 11-6 victories.
Drexel awaits its assignment at the upcoming College Squash Association Team Championships, which run Feb. 20-23 in New Haven, Conn. The Dragons have positioned themselves well for a second-straight appearance in the Howe Cup.
