Women’s Basketball Claims Road Win at Towson, 63-60

TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (21-7, 14-2 CAA) picked up a road win over the Towson University Tigers (14-13, 9-7 CAA) on Sunday afternoon by a final of 63-60 from SECU Arena in Towson, Md.
HIGHLIGHTS
* The Dragons improved to 14-2 in the CAA and have two home games left in the regular season.
* Drexel jumped out to a 15-point, 18-3 advantage in the first quarter. Towson trimmed it down to six points in the second before the Dragons took a 34-27 edge into halftime. The Tigers outscored the Dragons 18-13 in the third, giving them the lead for the first time as DU led by two after three quarter, 47-45. Towson hit 17-of-21 free throws on the day including eight in the fourth quarter to stay in the game. The Tigers cut it down to one late before Washington's layup preserved the win for Drexel.
* Senior Bailey Greenberg finished with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting with three three-pointers. The senior also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.
* Sophomore Keishana Washington scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half including a game-preserving layup with 12.7 seconds left in the game.
* Senior Aubree Brown recorded nine points, five assists, five rebounds and a steal.
* Junior Hannah Nihill notched eight points, six rebounds and five assists.

Drexel started the contest on an 8-0 run. Towson called a timeout with 4:23 to play in the quarter with Drexel ahead, 13-2, as Greenberg was already up to nine points on the day. An offensive rebound by Washington led to Nihill hitting a three-pointer before a baseline jumper from Leonard, 18-3. Towson started hitting some shots in the final two minutes including a pair from each Kionna Jeter and Shavonne Smith. Drexel held a 10-point lead after 10 minutes, 25-15. Greenberg finished with 12 points in the quarter after her second three-pointer.

Leonard knocked down her second baseline jumper for the Dragons' first basket of the second a little over two minutes into the period, 27-19. Brown made a trey and then dished a backdoor pass to Nihill as the junior slipped through the lane for an easy layup, putting the DU edge back into double-digits, 32-21. Drexel went roughly five minutes without a point as Towson went on a 6-0 run until Greenberg hit a jumper with an assist from Nihill with under a minute to play, 34-27. Towson could not make anything happen in its last possession as the Dragons took the seven-point lead into the locker room.

Nihill began the final half with her second three-pointer to push the margin back to 10, 37-27. But an 8-0 run for Towson cut the advantage down to two as Drexel called its first timeout with 6:44 remaining in the period. The stretch for the Tigers continued as they took their first lead of the game with 5:27 on the clock, 38-37. Washington ended the Drexel scoring drought and Towson's 11-0 run with a three-pointer as the Dragons regained the lead, 40-38. The sophomore knocked down another trey to cap a quick 6-0 run all by herself. Washington scored eight of the final 10 points for DU to end the period, 47-45.

Towson called its second timeout early in the quarter following baskets from Metzel and Washington to push the Drexel lead back to six, 51-45, with 8:11 to go. Greenberg converted a three-point play to cap the 7-0 stretch with 6:13 on the clock as Drexel's edge went back to nine, 54-45. Greenberg reached 20 points with a trey with 4:34 to play, 57-47. A 6-0 Towson run was stopped two layups by Brown. The Tigers hit five free throws down the stretch to make it a one-point game with 39.1 on the clock. With 12.7 remaining, Washington closed her afternoon with a final basket, a layup to extend the lead to three, 63-60. Towson threw up a desperation three at the end as Drexel held on for the three-point road victory.

* The win comes as No. 599 in program history for Drexel. The Dragons are now 599-518 in 38 seasons.
* Drexel shot 41.7% (25-of-60) from the floor, 38.1% (8-of-21) from three-point range and 100.0% (5-of-5) from the foul line.
* Towson shot 42.2% (19-of-45) from the field, 35.7% (5-of-14) from beyond the arc and 81.0% (17-of-21) from the free-throw line.
* Drexel led points in the paint, 26-22, and fastbreak points, 13-2.
* The Dragons assisted on 18 of their 25 field goals including five from each Brown and Nihill and four from Greenberg.
