Hughes on Brink of All-American Honors, Makes Holleran South Finals
3/7/2020 3:55:00 PM | Women's Squash
PHILADELPHIA – Anna Hughes won her lone match on Saturday to advance to the championship match of the Holleran South bracket at the College Squash Association Individual Championships and is now one win away from obtaining second team all-American honors.
Hughes would become just the fourth individual in women's program history to become an all-American. Her older sister, Hayley Hughes, became the program's first all-American in 2016, and Karina Tyma and Alina Bushma earned all-American status on Friday.
Saturday's victory was the 40th of Hughes' career. She becomes just the sixth women's player with 40 or more victories in a career at Drexel.
A fast start from Columbia's Jane Pincus put Hughes on the brink of elimination in short order. Pincus took the first two games by 13-11 and 11-7 margins. Hughes settled down the match with a decisive 11-2 victory in the third game then won a pair of close decisions (11-8 and 11-6) to complete the comeback.
Hughes draws top-seeded Eleonore Evans from Harvard in Sunday's final, which is scheduled for an 11:10 a.m. start.
