Golf Finishes Fifth at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. - The Drexel golf team ended the weekend by placing fifth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate hosted at Pinehurst No. 8. The Dragons finished just five strokes out of third place in their second tournament of the spring. Angelo Giantsopoulos and Connor Schmidt tied for 10th place overall. Elon picked up the win in the tournament, four strokes ahead of Davidson.
The Dragons saved their best round of the tournament for Sunday. Drexel shot 295, trailing only Belmont and Elon for the best round of the day. Giantsopoulos led the way with a one-over-par 72. The junior's round featured three birdies and an eagle. His eagle on number two was the lone birdie of the afternoon for the Dragons, who, along with the rest of the field, were forced to start the round late due to a frost delay. Alex Butler had a nice round on Sunday as well. The senior carded a 73. Schmidt and Jeffrey Cunningham each had a 75 on the day, while Stephen Cerbara shot 76.
Schmidt and Giantsopoulos finished the tournament at 224 (+11), which tied them for 10th overall. Graham Hutchinson of Elon was the medalist at even par. Three players tied for second, six shots behind him. Butler's 230 placed him in 27th overall. Cunningham finished up at 234, while Cerbara was at 239.
