Wrestling Adds 10 for 2020-21 Season

PHILADELPHIA – Mert and Joanne Hill Head Coach of Wrestling Matt Azevedo announced today the addition of 10 wrestlers for the upcoming 2020-21 season. The incoming crop of Dragons features a pair of state champions.
"The class of 2020 is a very strong group," Azevedo said. "They will add a lot of talent, depth and character to our already accomplished roster. I feel that Drexel Wrestling is on the cusp of making another jump as a team on the national level and the class of 2020 will play a big role in our future success."
Elijah Anthony
Elijah Anthony competed for Blair Academy in Blair Township, N.J. – a national power in prep wrestling. He wrestled to a third-place finish at prep nationals and will compete at heavyweight for Drexel.
Nathaniel Lapinski
Nathaniel Lapinski won over 70 matches for Cherokee High School in Evesham Township, New Jersey. He lost in the blood round of the 2020 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament, missing out on placement by a single win. Lapinski projects to wrestle at 174 pounds for the Dragons.
Jaxon Maroney
Jaxon Maroney is a three-time North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state champion at 126 pounds. He comes to Drexel from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C. after starting his prep career at Holly Springs High School in Holly Springs, N.C. He projects to compete at 133 pounds for the Dragons.
Luke Nichter
Luke Nichter compiled a 155-28 prep record and was a 2020 PIAA AAA state champion at 160 pounds for Chambersburg Area Senior High School in Chambersburg, Pa. Nichter was a state runner-up as a sophomore in 2018 and added a fourth-place finish at the state tournament as a junior. He projects to wrestle at either 157 or 165 pounds for the Dragons.
Gabriel Onorato
Gabriel Onorato placed fifth at 145 pounds at the NJSIAA Championships in 2020 and was a four-time District 26 champion for Paulsboro High School in Paulsboro, N.J. He figures to compete at 149 pounds for the Dragons
Riley Onorato
Riley Onorato spent the past two seasons at Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester, where he went 17-6 as a sophomore and helped the Roadrunners to consecutive Garden State Athletic Conference championships. He completed his prep career at Paulsboro High School in Paulsboro, N.J. He projects to wrestle at 174 pounds for Drexel.
Aidan Petersen
Aidan Petersen placed fifth at 171 pounds in the Michigan Division 3 state championships as a junior for Hillsdale High School in Hillsdale, Mich. He compiled a 27-4 record as a senior and projects to wrestle at 184 pounds.
Luke Scanlan
Luke Scanlan was a NJSIAA District 14 champion at 160 pounds during his senior season at Westfield High School in Westfield, N.J. He is projected to compete at 174 pounds for Drexel.
Gunner Spain
Gunner Spain was a PIAA AAA state qualifier as a senior at Neshaminy High School in Langhorne, Pa. He is a two-time section champion and was a regional runner-up as a senior. Spain amassed 100 prep victories and figures to wrestle at 165 pounds for the Dragons.
Kyle Waterman
Kyle Waterman was a three-time PIAA AAA placer at 126 pounds for Council Rock High School South in Holland, Pa. He put together a 128-32 prep record and won at least 38 matches in each of his last three seasons, including 44 as a sophomore in 2017-18. He projects to wrestle at 125 pounds at Drexel.
