PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University Director of Rowing Paul Savell announced today that Asiya Mahmud has been promoted to associate head coach of the rowing program. Mahmud will continue direct coaching responsibilities with the women's rowing team while also assuming an increased role in Drexel Rowing's operations and fundraising initiatives.
"I am so proud to announce Asiya Mahmud's promotion to associate head coach of rowing," Savell said. "Asiya has been an outstanding leader for our team and has been nationally recognized for her dedicated work as a coach. She acquired her Level 3 certification and now mentors other coaches working towards their Level 2 certification for USRowing. All this while helping lead the Dragons during one of our most successful periods in Drexel Rowing history. She is a role model for our team and a collaborator for our coaching staff. I'm always happy when good people are rewarded for their success and hard work."
"I very much support and welcome Asiya Mahmud's promotion to Associate Head Coach of Rowing," Drexel University Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer said. "I have followed Asiya's career as a rower for the Dragons, including a gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta and a quarterfinal appearance at the Henley Women's Regatta. As a very talented coach, I admire her commitment to integrity, leadership and the holistic student-athlete experience. She will help move the sport of rowing forward not only at Drexel, but indeed at the national level, to make it more equitable and modern."
A 2012 graduate of Drexel and former member of the women's rowing program, Mahmud has been on staff since 2015. A former Dad Vail gold medalist as a competitor, Mahmud helped guide the women's varsity eight to the boat's first-ever gold medals at the CAA Championships as well as the Murphy Cup. She is a USRowing Level 3 High Performance certified coach, having completed the intensive six-month certification program earlier in the year.
"I would like to thank Paul Savell and senior leadership for this opportunity," Mahmud said. "I've been fortunate to have Drexel University and the women's rowing program as part of my life as an athlete, alumna and staff member. I'm thankful for this recognition and look forward to continuing to elevate the women's rowing program at Drexel."
