PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball program welcomes six newcomers to the 2020-21 roster. The incoming class of Dragons features three freshmen (Xavier Bell, Lamar Oden, Jr. and Amari Williams) as well as a trio of transfers (Luke House, Anto Keshgegian and Chuka Mekkam).
In this six-part Q&A series, fans will get some background on each student-athlete. Sunday gives us a look at freshman Lamar Oden, Jr.
Oden graduated from Greenforest-McCalep Christian Academy and scored 1,259 points in his high school career. An all-state selection as a senior, he averaged 18.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Oden was a two-time Georgia State finalist, a regional player and freshman of the year and the valedictorian of his graduating class.
Q: What about Drexel most caught your eye?
A: The environment and the people for the most part!
Q: When did you start playing basketball, and what is your proudest basketball moment?
A: I started playing around four years old but started taking it seriously around eighth grade, and my proudest moment was winning a region championship.
Q: Who is your favorite NBA player, and what do you like about his game?
A: Kawhi Leonard. I love his game because he is the most-solid two-way basketball player in the league.
Q: What is the No. 1 thing you worked on to prepare for the jump to NCAA DI basketball?
A: Consistency and to maintain my hunger!
Q: What do you like to do away from basketball?
A: Video games and chill with my cousins.
Q: Who is your greatest influence on or off the court and why?
A: Kobe. It felt like Kobe was the athlete you should be. He always preached about working hard to get what you want, and I live by that.
Q: What is something most people don't know about you?
A: I dance a lot, and I'm funny when you get to know me.
Q: What do you think you want to major in, and do you have any career plans in mind?
A: Sports management. I can see myself managing a team.
