Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's tennis team traveled across University City to Penn's campus to participate in the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Regionals held on Penn's campus. Four Dragons competed on Thursday for a chance to enter the tournament's main draws, starting on Friday.

Xandy Hammitt began his day at qualifiers by defeating Jake Huarte of Army after three sets. The senior dropped the first set but battled back and won two straight to take the match. In the second round, Hammitt defeated Ben Brandherm of LIU 4-6, 6-0, 11-9.

Sanil Jagtiani had a breakout first day at the tournament. Jagtiani went up against one of the top-rated players in the qualifiers bracket, Samuel Paquette of Cornell. The Kolkata, India native took down Paquette in three sets, dropping the first and winning the next two. In the second round, Jagtiani defeated David Gorshein of Army with a score of 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles play, one duo needed to make it through qualification, and Jagtiani and Djordje Janackovic were able to cruise by their first opponents from St. John's by a score of 8-3. The team returns to the court on Friday for a chance to move onto the main draw.

Hammitt and Jagtiani join Alex De Sousa and Alan Jesudason in the main singles draw, starting on Friday. The Dragons will also have two teams in the doubles main draw tomorrow. De Sousa and Jesudason start their hunt for an ITA championship, and the duo of Matvey Radionov and Hammitt will join them.
