Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team wraps its three-game season-opening homestand, hosting City 6 rival, La Salle on Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
About Drexel
Drexel enters play 1-1 on the season following a 63-55 win against Saint Joseph's on Friday. Tessa Brugler led the Dragons with 19 points against the Hawks.
The Dragons feature a balanced scoring attack with four players all posting 11.5 or more points through the first two games of the year. Brugler leads the way with 15.5 and 8.5 rebounds, while Hannah Nihill is posting 12.0 per game with Mariah Leonard and Keishana Washington scoring 11.5 a night. Uncharacteristically for DU, a lot of the points are coming in the paint as Drexel has netted 62 of 113 points (54.9 percent) from in close.
Drexel has also had an impressive post presence defensively to start the year. Through two games, the Dragons have blocked eight shots. Brugler and Kate Connolly have three each with Leonard and Hetta Saatman coming away with one apiece. While eight blocks in two games may not sound like a lot, it is the most through a pair of games for Drexel since it had 10 in 2015-16. It took DU five games to reach eight blocks a season ago.
Milestone Watch
Hannah Nihill enters the game with 985 career points.
Scouting La Salle
La Salle enters play 1-1 on the season and is coming off a 67-58 overtime win against Rider on Saturday. The Explorers were predicted to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll after a 12-14 mark including a 7-10 record in A10 play in 2020-21.
A pair of preseason All-Conference honorees lead La Salle into the season. Second Teamer Kayla Spruill averaged 15.0 points per game last season to go along with a team-high 6.1 rebounds a contest. Claire Jacobs was selected to the preseason Third Team after netting 16.3 an outing a year ago. Both are off to strong starts in 2021-22 as with Spruill recording 32 points and 31 rebounds in the first two games with Jacobs posting 17 and six. Jaye Haynes adds a third scoring option for the Explorers, tallying 16.0 points per contest through the first two games.
Head Coach Mountain MacGillivray is in his fourth season at La Salle with a record of 32-57. His teams have improved their winning percentage each year with the Explorers.
All-Time Series
Wednesday is the 28th all-time matchup between Drexel and La Salle, the most for the Dragons against any City 6 opponent. Overall, the Explorers hold a 17-10 advantage and won the last game between the two teams, 58-55 on January 13, 2021 at Gola Arena in Olney. Prior to last season, DU won six in a row in the series, dating to an 86-55 win on November 16, 2010.
