Martin ties career-high with 24 points in the loss
NASSAU, Bahamas – Camren Wynter's long 3-pointer in the final seconds came up short at Tulane held off Drexel, 90-87, in overtime on Monday night in the first game of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship held at the Baha Mar Convention Center. The game, originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m, was delayed midway through the second half due to a leak in the roof and was restarted more than four hours later on a secondary court.
The game was close down the stretch and had five lead changes in the last three minutes. The Dragons appeared to be in good shape in the final minute. Wynter made a short jumper in the paint to put DU up by three at 77-74. Tulane missed a 3-pointer and Drexel had possession, but Martin stepped on the sidelines for a turnover with just 17 seconds to play. The Green Wave came down court and Kevin Cross drove to the bucket. He scored and was fouled by James Butler with 11 seconds to play. Cross made the free throw to tie it. The Dragons raced into the front court but Wynter's long two-point attempt missed and the game went an extra session. The Dragons were forced to play the extra period without both Butler and Amari Williams, as each of Drexel's big men fouled out.
Drexel never led in the overtime period. The Dragons trailed by as many as five points before Wynter converted a 3-point play with 14 seconds to play to make it 89-87. Drexel was forced to foul and Jalen Cook made one of his two free throws with nine seconds remaining. Drexel had a chance to tie but Wynter's contested three came up well short as the Green Wave escaped with the win.
Melik Martin had his best game in a Drexel uniform. The graduate transfer tied a career-high 24 points on an efficient 11-for-15 shooting. He also had six rebounds. Xavier Bell also had a career-high with 20 points. Butler had his second-straight double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Wynter added 13 points.
Jaylen Forbes had a huge game for the Green Wave. He poured in 30 points and had 11 rebounds. Cross scored 21, while Cook had 19 points. The Green Wave shot 9-for-18 from deep and were also 50 percent from the floor.
The Dragons found themselves down by 12 at half, but came out strong early in the final 20 minutes. A 6-0 run sliced the lead to 47-42 and a few minutes later, Bell scored five straight points including a 3-pointer to make it 52-51. Tulane increased the lead to 57-53 with a pair of Cross free throws at the 12:19 mark, but a few seconds later, play was stopped as water slowly dripped on the court from the ceiling. After a lengthy delay of more than an hour due to a leak in the roof, the game was pushed back until 8 p.m. The Dragons returned to their rooms in the attached hotel, got a quick meal and returned to the Convention Center's practice gym to resume play.
Tulane had its best shooting half of the young season in the opening 20 minutes and held a 12-point lead at the half. The Green Wave was 7-for-11 from deep and shot 54 percent overall. Forbes, in his second year with Tulane after transferring from Alabama, was 7-for-7 from the floor in the first half and made all five of his 3-point attempts. Butler led Drexel with 11 points, but the Dragons managed to make just one of their nine 3-pointers. Overall Drexel was just 5-for-21 from long range.
Due to today's unforeseen events, tomorrow's schedule at the Baha Mar Convention Center tomorrow was adjusted. Drexel will face Charlotte at 2:30 p.m.
